Irritable Bowl
Irritable bowl is a painful condition that causes one or more of these symptoms within the abdomen; diarrhea, constipation, cramping and bloating. Irritable bowl affects the Large Intestine where stool is stored. Although irritable bowl is very painful, it is not a disease. It is called a functional disorder, which means that the Large Intestine is not functioning properly, which causes the discomfort within the abdomen. Women show the symptoms of irritable bowl more than men. Some of these women may notice an increase in their symptoms during their menstral cycle.

The main symtoms of irritable bowl are pain or discomfort in the abdominal area, and chronic diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both. Other symptoms may include a bloated abdomen or a feeling that you haven't finished a bowl movement.
Doctors really don't know what causes irritable bowl, but some suspect that irritable bowl may be stress related. When you have irritable bowl the nerves and muscles in the bowl are extra sensitive. The muscles may contract too much when you eat. These contractions may cause diarrhea.
Your Doctor may suspect that you have irritable bowl due to your symtoms. There are specific symptoms that a doctor will look for which is called the "Rome Criteria". Your doctor may order other medical tests to be sure that you don't have another health problem that causes the same symptoms. To diagnose irritable bowl you may be asked to take some blood tests and a physical exam. Some other test that may be included is x-ray your abdomen to see any problems in the Large Intestine. Another test is a Colonoscopy, which is when the doctor inserts a tiny camera into your colon to take pictures to see if there are any problems.

Although there is no cure for irritable bowl, there are treatments. These treatments may include diet changes, medicines, and stress relief. Your doctor might be able to help you with a treatment plan to see what works best for you. Some things that work for one person do not always work for another.
Some of the diet changes may be more fibre in your daily diet. Smaller more frequent meals throuout the day, may also relieve the symptoms of irritable bowl. If changes to your diet do not have the desired effect there are medications that can be perscribed by your doctor. These medications may include laxitives, antispasmodics to control the spasms, or antidepressants have been shown to relieve the cramping also. If your symtoms are severe you may be perscribed Lotronix, this medication is only perscribed if none of the other treatments are effective.
Although irritable bowl is very painful it does not cause any long lasting damage to the colon.
